About Yaprak
Born in Istanbul, I grew up surrounded by belligerent and fragmented realities that have shaped my sense of wholeness and belonging. My journey led me to study design in Milan and New York, where I deepened my understanding of form, function, and flow, which became a way of imagining human-friendlier worlds. Currently, I am based in Long Island City, New York, working with clay sculptures that help me reflect on the beauty and complexity of the bodies we inhabit. My pieces touch the invisibly painful interplay between the parts and the whole, questioning the notions of loss and attachment.
Parts + Holes
It all began with an accident.
In order not to explode, the clay body needs to be emptied out after all. These accidental holes kept bringing up the pain and the lack, so I embraced them.
Eventually the work is finding some beauty in the whole.
